​​Cathy Burgess, PhD, TEP

​​Cathy (Mary Catherine) is a Trainer/Educator/Practitioner (TEP) of Psychodrama, Sociometry, and Group Psychotherapy; Licensed Mental Health Practitioner in Nebraska; shamanic practitioner; musician; and found of White Buffalo Associates. In the 1990s, she became a facilitator of Family Reconstruction work; began Mystery School and Social Artistry training with Jean Houston; participated in introductory Theatre of the Oppressed workshops; and took Playback Theatre Core Training. In the early 200s, she served on the American Board of Examiners for Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy.

Throughout her career, Cathy has enjoyed incorporating action methods into her work as teacher; facilitator of staff leadership and development for various businesses; co-planner, co-organizer, and co-presenter of numerous Shamanic, Divine Feminine, and Feminist Spirituality conferences, workshops, and retreats in the USA and the UK; CTT facilitator with Barrett Values Centre; graduate facilitator for the IONS Conscious Aging program; pilot facilitator for Death Makes Life Possible workshops; facilitator of the Boundless Compassion program; multi-faith chaplain, research fellow, honorary fellow, and teacher of 'The Power of Myth and the Hero's Journey" and "Enacting Personal and Collective Stories" courses at the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she received her PhD in 2005 and still serves as an honorary fellow.

Cathy has written one book (A New Paradigm of Spirituality and Religion), two published book reviews, and two articles (one as co-author). She lives in Edinburgh with her partner Peter, but she travels to Omaha (and Seattle, where her son Sean lives) to visit family and friends and to facilitate workshops.


Introduction to Psychodrama

Students study the history of J. L. Moreno and the development of psychodrama. They discuss and experience the five instruments of psychodrama: the director, protagonist, auxiliaries, audience, and stage; the structure of a psychodrama: warm-up, enactment, de-roling, and sharing; and key techniques such as the auxiliary ego, doubling, role playing and role reversal. Principles and techniques of sociometry are addressed. The use of psychodrama with various populations is discussed.
